Poverty Alleviation

The major impact of Rafiki training has been the contribution to the alleviation of poverty. Some girls have become breadwinners for their families. Training has enabled girls to become gainfully employed or start their own income generating projects resulting in financial independence. Girls’ perspectives on life and their options have widened as most of them have realized that they are able to do more with their lives and are able to fend for themselves without relying on other people.

The skills that the girls acquire at RGC or through RGC enable them to obtain income either from their own income generating projects or from being employed. There are girls who have been able to be totally self-sufficient, who have been able to stay on their own and take care of themselves. Many girls have been able to contribute significantly to the finances in the homes where they live in. Quite a big number have been able to support their siblings by providing school fees for their education, food, clothes, while others have advanced their careers and paid for their own education once they started earning an income. Standards of living have improved in these girls’ lives and homes including those who live in child headed homes. Before and during training they were hardly able to raise bus fares and they did not always have enough food. After training they are able to earn a living and even support others in the community, hence the conclusion that RGC has been able to alleviate poverty in the lives of its beneficiaries. A recent evaluation showed that at least 80% of those who are trained are either in employment or are running their income generating projects
